Magical Milk

Try this fun science experiment to learn more about chemical reactions - with milk!

Milk is made up of many ingredients, and includes fat particles. When the fat in the milk reacts to the dishwashing liquid it tries to break up the particles.

If you want to know more about the colour of milk and what’s inside, read my article on why milk is white.

For this experiment you will need:

  • A shallow bowl
  • Full-fat milk (or any milk you have)
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Food colouring
  • Cotton buds

What to do:

Kids, please ask your parents first before starting this activity and always have a grown up to help you during the experiment.

First: Pour the milk into the bowl carefully and keep it very still for a few minutes. While you are waiting, get your food colouring ready.

Next: Starting with one colour, drop a few spots of food colouring around the bowl leaving space in between for other colours. Repeat this step with your other colours.

Finally: Put a very small amount of soap on the end of the cotton bud, then touch one of the colours to watch your milk come alive!
